许多人认为旧约圣经是由三十九个零散的文学单元组成,詹逊却在本书一再强调,旧约是一个整体,记录了从人类受造到基督将要降临的历史。这一思路透过书中有关历史、地理的内容中呈现出来,极富启发性。除此之外,作者又列出丰富的参考书目,供有心作深入研究的读者参考。

本书的主导思想是引领读者自行研读圣经。许多时候,人们研读新约时只阅读别人的心得,却不肯自己花时间读圣经。本书的目的是要引发读者综览新约经卷,找出各卷的中心思想。为方便读者明白各卷的重点主题,书中列出一些参考资料(如大纲);但是,这些资料仅供协助读者个人研究,方便大家在遇到艰涩难解的经文时不致兴味索然;最后,读者还要自行研究,不要总是靠赖别人帮助。
本书的另一目的是叫读者明白新约各卷的信息结构。若要全面了解圣经,除了知道神说过什么以外,还须了解他为什么这样说;因此本书采用大量图表,务求将各卷圣经的结构剖析得清清楚楚。
研究圣经重点主题的人,由于不必仔细分析经文,往往忽略应用这一步骤。本书的另一目的就是帮助读者反省,把经文重点主题应用于生活。我们的目的是反省和应用。无论是哪一种研经法,读者都应以此为最终目标。
除此以外,本书又提供其他重要补充材料。以下为本书各章的分段法。
一、读前准备
这是每章的第一部分内容,目的是要读者在综览某卷书前先做好准备。它可以使读者产生研读兴趣,触发他们的学习动机,因此颇为重要。
二、背景
各卷书都是在特定的时空写成,各有不同背景。这一部分就是背景讨论,其中许多资料都不是经文本身所蕴含的。我们会反复提及重要的事项,以加深读者的印象。
三、综览
这是全书的主干,也是最需要下功夫的地方。第二章将详论综览法,提出综览新约各卷的几个步骤。
四、重点主题
综览全卷书以后,就该讨论书中重点主题。学术问题与圣经难题都不属综览范围,因而不在讨论之列;而书中的评论,则可以作为综览后的总结,提供建议以便日后进一步研究之用。
五、钥字钥节
有些字句和经节显然与该卷书主题相关。我们会在书中约略提及,盼望读者自行发掘和补充。
六、应用
本段利用问题启发读者把新约圣经的教训应用于个人日常生活上。
七、复习题
